How to reacquire your italian citizenship.

If you renounced your Italian citizenship before 1992, you’re not alone. The good news is that Italy provides a clear legal pathway to get your citizenship back and it’s much more streamlined than you may think (no more moving to Italy…for now).

What Changed in 2025?

In May 2025, Italy passed Law No. 74/2025, which amended Article 17, paragraph 1 of Law No. 91/1992. This amendment created a limited-time opportunity (from July 1, 2025 through December 31, 2027) for those who renounced their Italian citizenships before 1992 to reacquire Italian citizenship simply by submitting a formal declaration, without relocating to Italy.

Before this change, many applicants had to establish and maintain residency in Italy for six months to one year in order to restore citizenship. Now, eligible former citizens can file a statement of intent from abroad and regain citizenship.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for this reacquisition pathway, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You lost your Italian citizenship before August 15, 1992.

  • You were either:

    • Born in Italy

      or

    • Born abroad but lived in Italy for at least two continuous years before losing your Italian citizenship.

Note: If you renounced Italian citizenship after August 15, 1992, this specific reacquisition process does not apply.

How the Process Works (2025‑2027 Window)

  1. Prepare your documents – All documents must be ordered new. Originals will not be accepted.

Typical Italian originating documents include your Italian birth certificate, certificato storico di residenza and the certificato di cittadinanza (all located a your comune). While the “foreign” based documents would include and your naturalization certificate, marriage, divorce, and birth certificates of any children (if applicable).

  2. Submit a formal declaration of your intent to reacquire Italian citizenship.

Depending on how your consulate provides the reacquisition service, you will either have to send the newly ordered and prepared documents to your consulate by mail or via email along with the required filled-out reacquisition form. Once they receive the documents, they will contact you to set up an in-person appointment. You will not have to make an appointment via the Prenotami website.

  3. On the day of your appointment you will be fingerprinted and will have to sign a few documents. At that point, your citizenship will be restored without having to establish residency in Italy. Once this last step is complete you will then be able to make a passport appointment via the Prenotami website.

Important note: Your reacquisition of citizenship will not make a difference to eligibility of your children or grandchildren, etc. If you choose to proceed with this process, it should be for your own interest only. It is not something that can be passed down to them.
